Legendary GK Coach Lincoln Phillips Joins CFC Technical Staff

Continental FC is pleased to announce the appointment of Lincoln Phillips as its Director of Goalkeeping Development.

“It is our immense pleasure to announce that we have acquired the services of Lincoln Phillips. He is not only a great coach and mentor, he is an even better member of society! He is a leader in the game of soccer, and he will improve the quality of our CFC goalkeepers and the goalkeepers in this area.” states Skip Thorp, Technical Director of Continental FC.

Phillips is a pioneer of the game who has achieved success on the professional, collegiate, and international levels as a player, coach, and administrator. An accomplished author, Phillips’ book on goalkeeping ‘The Last Line of Defense, The First Line of Attack’ is heralded as one of the best books ever written on the position.

As a college coach, Philips established himself in the record books by leading the first and only historically black college, Howard University, to two NCAA Division I championships and a still standing NCAA season record of 19-0-0. He went on to develop the Virginia Commonwealth University soccer program into a top twenty outfit during his five-year stint at the Richmond, Virginia university.

In 1992, Phillips was appointed to work with the U.S. National Men’s Team as its goalkeeping coach and was a key figure in preparing the international careers of Tony Meola, Brad Friedel, and Kasey Keller. Phillips would go on serve as goalkeeper coaches for other men’s and women’s U.S. National Teams.

A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Phillips played on his country’s first World Cup qualifying campaign shortly after T&T earned its independence from Great Britain in 1962 and is regarded by many as the finest goalkeeper to emerge from the country. In 2004, Trinidad and Tobago recruited Phillips to serve as Technical Director for its national team programs. As TD, Phillips guided T&T through its most prolific international period ever with its U17 Men’s Team, U17 Women’s Team, and U20 Men’s Team all making appearances in their respective World Cups. In 2005 the senior Men’s National Team became the smallest country to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

“Lincoln and I have worked together before and he is one of my biggest mentors. Whenever we are together, great things happen!!” from Technical Director Skip Thorp.

A USSF A License coach, Phillips is a frequent presenter at the NSCAA /United Soccer Coaches Conventions and served on the FIFA Technical Staff of Instructors. As the Owner/Director of the Lincoln Phillips Soccer School and Top Flight Goalkeeping Academy, Phillips has touched the lives of several generations of footballers, coaches, and parents.

Phillips joins the Continental FC family along with his wife of 53 years, Linda, and their 4 sons and 5 grandchildren.
